Step-by-Step Guide to Filing Taxes for Beginners in 2026

Filing Taxes for the First Time?

If you're a young Malaysian adult who just started working, or someone who has never filed taxes before, this guide walks you through the entire process in simple terms.

What You Need Before Starting

Step 1: Register on MyTax

Visit mytax.hasil.gov.my and register using your MyKad number. First-time users need to apply for a Digital Certificate through the e-CP55D process. You'll receive an activation email within 5 working days.

Step 2: Log In and Select Your Form

Most salaried employees will use Form e-BE. If you have side income or freelance work, use Form e-B instead.

Step 3: Fill In Your Income

Enter your employment income as shown on Form EA. The system will auto-calculate your tax based on the progressive rates.

Step 4: Claim Your Reliefs

Go through each relief category and enter the amounts you're eligible for. Common ones include EPF, insurance premiums, lifestyle purchases, and medical expenses.

Step 5: Review and Submit

Double-check everything, then submit. Save the confirmation slip as PDF — this is your proof of filing.

The e-Filing deadline for Form BE is 15 May 2026. Filing earlier gives you faster processing and avoids last-minute system congestion.
